There's a Josh Ritter poster in the basement inscribed subtly with the subtitle "with Gregory Alan Isakov". Despite this, somehow it's taken me several years to listen to his work. After doing so, it's evident that there definitely is crossover with Josh on the down tempo side of the equation. This song is one of the rare mid-tempo numbers yet somehow retains the brilliant lyrical resonance that is more typical of a slower pace. The song begins: "travelling through the graveyard with a suitcase full of sparks" and after several verses ends: "ohhh we can open up that suitcase full of sparks". What's not to like?
Production notes: guitar recorded using a Gibson LG-2 Americana. Overdubs done later (banjo, a vintage mandolin, harmonica, extra guitar tracks using a Vox amPlug). Virtual instruments added using KONTAKT (piano, choir). Recording was done with an MXL960 tube mic and Maudio DMP3 pre.
