I recently did a post with a couple of Trampled by Turtles songs that I recorded 'solo acoustic'. However, the best way to play this music (bluegrass-punk?) is in a group setting. I recently acquired a Johnson MA-120 mandolin off craigslist and thought it would be neat to try playing it at our regular jam night. It cuts through wonderfully! There's two acoustic guitars (Martin D-35 and Larrivee L-03), drums, and bass guitar on this recording as well and you can definitely hear the mandolin. Surprising, since it was basically the cheapest mandolin I could find...
Anyway, save for one bar that we managed to mangle, this recording sounds pretty good! There's definitely a psychology involved when recording that makes everyone tense up just a little bit. Prior to this we played a flawless take (of course when the microphones were off). This was done simply with a Zoom H1N recording the whole room.
