I'm going to cheat and call this a cover of a Dawes song, since I've been posting so much Middle Brother. However, with the 3 part harmonies, it is much closer to the Middle Brother interpretation. Either way, it is definitely one of my favourite songs composed by Taylor Goldsmith (pictured on the left). We saw Dawes live both at Newport (albeit a short encore) as well as with Blitzen Trapper more recently.
This is a poignant but depressing song about love (the other type of love song). Again, it was recorded in two sessions. The lead vocal and guitar track (Martin D-35) was recorded as one track. The harmonies were all overdubbed separately at a later date. There is a 2-3 db EQ dip applied to the harmonies in the 4-6K frequency range, making for a better "blend" overall. Conversely, there is a bit of an EQ lift at around 4-6K on the lead vocal and guitar to give it a bit more presence. Everything was recorded through a Rode NT1 condenser mic. There's a few errors in the lead vocal, but nothing's perfect...
