One of recent bands that I've been listening to is Frightened Rabbit. They're Scottish... but nothing like Belle & Sebastian or Camera Obscura.
Anyway, this is their recent single, Swim Until You Can't See Land recorded on a Larrivee acoustic with an EV Raven mic (just a standard dynamic mic). It was done simply in mono with the mic in front of me while I played. The sound out of this is decent given it only is a $50 mic..
Not spending much time on this one, just a first take... for better or for worse I don't believe in Auto-tune! The song is about suicide, so it's useful to keep the sense of desperation in the vocals rather than making it sound robotic (at least that's how I would rationalize it). There is a light EQ applied as the mic seems a bit less sensitive in the treble area than the midrange (perhaps due to the fact it's a dynamic mic not a condenser).
The song is in a weird tuning (CGDGBE) which makes for the interesting droning (or one could argue drowning) bass tones.
